About the job

As a Regional Research Economist, you will collaborate with governments, academia, industry, and civil society to measure and understand AI's economic effects and explore policy interventions. You will contribute to the Anthropic Economic Index, developing new methodologies to assess AI's usage, diffusion, and impact, and broadening access to these insights. This role involves using advanced econometrics, machine learning, and structural estimation to drive impact on policy discussions and inform Anthropic's business and product strategies. The team focuses on rigorous empirical methods and novel measurement approaches, building datasets to track AI's impact on labor markets, productivity, and economic transformation using a privacy-preserving system to analyze real-world AI interactions.

Responsibilities

  • Build and maintain relationships with academic institutions, policy think tanks, and research partners as a primary contact for regional economic impact work.
  • Advance research collaborations to address country- or regional-specific economic impact questions.
  • Translate research insights into actionable recommendations for policy discussions.
  • Contribute fundamentally to the development and expansion of the Anthropic Economic Index, including country/regional-specific analysis.
  • Design and collaborate on empirical research regarding AI's economic effects with regional governments, academia, industry, and civil society.
  • Develop new methodological approaches with regional partners to study AI's impact on labor markets, productivity, economic inequality, industry disruption, and aggregate economic trajectories.
  • Work cross-functionally with technical teams to enhance measurement infrastructure and data collection.
  • Amplify external engagement through research publications, policy briefs, and presentations to diverse stakeholders.

Requirements

  • PhD in Economics.
  • Strong track record of empirical research, especially studies combining novel data sources with economic theory or implementing frontier causal inference and machine learning methods.
  • Demonstrated experience working in and relevant relationships across the specified region.
  • Experience relevant to studying AI's economic impact, including labor market analysis, task-based approaches, large-scale data analysis, econometric methods, LLMs for social science, policy-relevant economic research, experimental/quasi-experimental methods, macroeconomic modeling, and agent-based modeling.
  • Proficiency in Python, R, SQL, or similar large-scale data analysis tools.
  • Experience with novel datasets and measurement systems.
  • Comfort learning new technical tools and frameworks.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead complex research projects from conception to publication.
  • Ability to communicate technical findings to diverse audiences.
  • Ability to build relationships across academic, policy, and industry communities.
  • Strong interest in ensuring AI development benefits humanity.
  • Comfort working with AI systems and critical thinking about their capabilities and limitations.
