About the job
Poolside is building a company to create Artificial General Intelligence, aiming to accelerate software development through agentic systems, coding assistants, and frontier models. This role is part of the Applied Research team, focused on transforming pre-trained Large Language Models (LLMs) into well-aligned and highly capable AI systems specifically for coding and software development. You will be involved in building data pipelines and environments for agentic use cases, researching and implementing post-training algorithms, and designing experiments to test hypotheses, with access to significant GPU resources.
Responsibilities
- Research and experiment on specializing foundational models for agentic use cases.
- Build and maintain data and training pipelines.
- Stay updated on the latest research in LLMs, alignment, synthetic data generation, and code generation.
- Design, analyze, and iterate on training, fine-tuning, and data generation experiments.
- Write high-quality, pragmatic code.
- Collaborate with the team by planning future steps and communicating clearly.
Requirements
- Experience with Large Language Models (LLMs).
- Deep knowledge of Transformers.
- Strong deep learning fundamentals.
- Good understanding of data quality and suitability.
- Experience with post-training techniques for LLMs.
- Extensive experience probing LLMs to understand their capabilities and limitations.
- Knowledge of distributed training.
- Strong machine learning and engineering background.
- Research experience, including proposing and evaluating novel ideas.
- Familiarity with or contributions to state-of-the-art in LLM fine-tuning, alignment, synthetic data generation, continual learning, RLHF, or code generation.
- Comfortable working in a rapidly iterating environment.
- Programming experience, particularly in Python with PyTorch or Jax.
- Experience with Linux.
- Strong algorithmic skills.
- Ability to question code quality policies when applicable.
- Prior experience in non-ML programming, especially not in Python, is a plus.
Benefits
- Fully remote work & flexible hours
- 37 days/year of vacation & holidays
- Health insurance allowance for you & dependents
- 16 weeks of flexible, full-pay parental leave
- Well-being, always-be-learning & home office allowances
- Company-provided equipment
