About the job

Poolside is building a world where AI is the engine behind economically valuable work and scientific progress, aiming to accelerate software development with agentic systems, coding assistants, and frontier models. This role focuses on designing and implementing the build, CI/CD, and tooling infrastructure that researchers and engineers rely on daily. You will join the infrastructure team as the second engineer focused on developer experience, partnering closely with the current owner while sharing on-call, incident response, and platform ownership. The mission is to make it seamless for researchers and engineers to build, test, and ship by optimizing the monorepo, ensuring reproducible builds, and maintaining a coherent Python ecosystem through automation.

Responsibilities

  • Design and manage infrastructure for engineers and researchers.
  • Leverage automation to multiply impact across teams.
  • Develop tools and solutions to increase engineering team efficiency.
  • Make the monorepo fast, builds reproducible, and the Python ecosystem coherent.
  • Contribute to on-call, incident response, and platform ownership.
  • Partner closely with the existing developer experience engineer.

Requirements

  • Strong hands-on experience with Bazel, including writing and maintaining rules, macros, and toolchains.
  • Familiarity with remote caching and build optimizations.
  • Experience setting up and managing CI/CD pipelines, preferably with Buildkite.
  • Comfortable with dynamic pipelines, agent fleet management, and build-time optimization.
  • Strong Python proficiency, including packaging, dependency management (uv/pip/Poetry), and virtual environments.
  • Experience integrating Python and ML/research codebases into a monorepo build system.
  • Proficient in Go.
  • Experience writing backend services.
  • Familiarity with writing CLI applications and internal developer tooling.
  • Expertise in debugging issues on Linux, including network and process-related problems.
  • Experience running containers using Kubernetes.
  • Experience with managed or self-hosted Kubernetes.
  • Familiarity with AWS services.
  • Comfortable managing IAM policies and ensuring proper permission settings.
  • Hands-on experience with Terraform or OpenTofu for managing complex AWS environments.
  • Skilled in observability and monitoring tools and practices.
  • Experienced in incident response protocols and best practices.
  • Comfortable working within a broader infrastructure team, sharing on-call, contributing to incident response, and building tooling.

Benefits

  • Fully remote work & flexible hours
  • 37 days/year of vacation & holidays
  • Health insurance allowance for you & dependents
  • 16 weeks of flexible, full-pay parental leave
  • Well-being, always-be-learning & home office allowances
