About the job
Perplexity is seeking a Member of Technical Staff (Software Engineer, Monetization) to own the critical billing platform and monetization systems that power their agentic AI products, including Computer. This role is foundational to Perplexity's revenue streams, responsible for metering agent actions, enforcing credit budgets, and settling costs. You will design and build abstractions that enable product teams to easily introduce new SKUs, run pricing experiments, and convert users to paying customers, ensuring all revenue paths are reliable, observable, and extensible across subscriptions, usage-based billing, and enterprise contracts.
Responsibilities
- Design, build, and own the billing platform and monetization systems.
- Lead features end-to-end, from problem definition to launch, including billing API abstractions.
- Build and operate subscription, invoicing, and usage-based billing systems for millions of users.
- Improve reliability through tiered SLOs, proactive monitoring, and alerting for revenue-impacting issues.
- Partner with Finance, Data Science, Growth, Security, Support, and go-to-market teams for data accuracy and compliance.
- Expand payment method coverage and optimize authorization rates globally.
- Build internal tooling for Support and Finance to quickly diagnose and resolve billing issues.
Requirements
- 4+ years of professional software engineering experience.
- Direct experience building or scaling billing, payments, subscription, or monetization systems.
- Deep familiarity with payment processors (e.g., Stripe), including subscriptions, invoicing, disputes, refunds, and webhooks.
- Demonstrated experience building in-house billing solutions.
- Strong backend engineering skills in Python and reasoning about complex distributed systems.
- Experience with relational databases (PostgreSQL) and data-informed decision-making.
- Strong product judgment to translate problems into effective technical solutions.
- Self-motivated with strong ownership instincts and ability to drive improvements.
- Track record of cross-functional collaboration with Finance, Support, or Growth stakeholders.
- Genuine interest in AI products and willingness to learn quickly.
