Perplexity is seeking an Applied AI Engineer to join a mission-critical team focused on designing, building, and iterating on cutting-edge agents that power our core experience. You will develop frontier context layer applications, aiming to fulfill the curiosity of millions of users worldwide. This role involves applying state-of-the-art ML and LLM techniques to solve complex problems in personalization, contextual recommendations, and monetization, while also building frontier agent capabilities on top of Perplexity Computer.
Responsibilities
- Apply state-of-the-art ML and LLM techniques to personalization (LLM memory, context summarization, retrieval, ranking), contextual recommendations, and monetization applications.
- Build frontier agent capabilities on Perplexity Computer.
- Develop an auto research harness for offline and online techniques, including designing experiments and metrics for quality and impact assessment.
- Manage the entire model lifecycle from research to production, encompassing data analysis, modeling, evaluation, offline/online A/B testing, and iterative improvement.
- Build autonomous harnesses for agent squads to explore diverse problem spaces.
- Collaborate with engineers, PMs, data scientists, and designers to ensure AI drives meaningful product improvements.
- Evaluate and incorporate emerging research and algorithms into the product lifecycle to stay at the forefront of ML/AI innovation.
Requirements
- 5+ years of experience building and shipping robust AI products for large-scale, user-facing or data-driven products.
- Strong software engineering skills, including Python, production-quality codebases, and collaborative development.
- Experience using agentic coding tools for large-scale parallel developments.
- In-depth experience with the full AI lifecycle: data analysis, rigorous evaluation, and ongoing monitoring/improvement.
- Proven collaborator and communicator, excelling in high-velocity, cross-functional teams.
- Curious, driven by end-user/product impact, and passionate about advancing applied ML and AI.
- BS, MS, or PhD in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field (or equivalent experience).
