About the job

Perplexity is looking for a Tech Lead Manager (TLM) to lead and grow its Agents engineering team. This team comprises AI/ML, backend, and full-stack engineers focused on building agentic experiences within the Comet ecosystem. The vision is to create AI agents that can fulfill user intentions through open-ended interactions with the world. As the Agents TLM, you will combine AI expertise, product intuition, and engineering management skills to push the boundaries of what AI agents can achieve for millions of users. You will lead, develop, and support a team in tackling significant challenges in AI, such as designing agents for digital navigation, training models for complex decision-making, ensuring excellent user experiences across various platforms, developing secure agentic capabilities, and optimizing agent-environment interactions.

Responsibilities

  • Provide technical leadership for a rapidly growing AI agents product.
  • Develop and utilize advanced AI models, infrastructure, and browser technologies to expand capabilities and scale them for a growing user base.
  • Guide team's system architectures and product roadmaps with strong technical and product intuition.
  • Ensure product reliability, code quality, AI evaluation, testing, and maintenance for the team.
  • Oversee hiring, onboarding, and mentorship for a growing team, including developing interview processes and sourcing candidates.
  • Collaborate with Perplexity co-founders to achieve strategic objectives that advance the AI industry.

Requirements

  • Strong foundational understanding of the complete AI product stack.
  • Proficiency in Python; TypeScript, Go, and/or Rust are a plus.
  • Domain expertise in at least one of: context engineering and tool interfaces for frontier AI models, post-training and reinforcement learning (especially for multimodal models), or browser technologies (CDP, Playwright, extension development).
  • Strong product intuition and a focus on user experience excellence.
  • Significant hands-on technical experience with frontier models, particularly those relevant to open-world agents.
  • Excellent organizational skills for managing parallel technical projects and guiding teams in making trade-offs and prioritization decisions.
  • Experience managing engineering teams, including recruiting, developing, and retaining talent.
  • 8+ years of engineering experience, with at least 3 years in an engineering management role.
