Perplexity is seeking an Engineering Manager for the Multimodal team to lead the development of real-time voice and multimodal experiences. This role involves hiring and developing engineers, setting technical direction, and driving new products at the intersection of voice, vision, and AI agents. The team owns the entire user interaction path, from voice input to AI-generated answers, encompassing real-time session infrastructure, backend orchestration, and SDKs for voice and multimodal features across Perplexity's applications.
Responsibilities
- Lead the team building real-time voice and multimodal experiences, taking products from prototype to launch.
- Own the team's roadmap, prioritizing voice and vision experiences and necessary infrastructure.
- Hire and develop engineers, providing them with ownership and feedback for growth.
- Shape the architecture for the complete voice experience, from user input to model and agent responses.
- Lead systems that convert live conversations into action by connecting voice models to tools, agents, and tasks.
- Guide the team in addressing latency, reliability, and scaling challenges for live voice interactions.
- Partner with SDK, client, infrastructure, and model teams to integrate new audio and vision capabilities into user-facing applications.
- Utilize user feedback and performance data to enhance experiences post-launch and guide future investments.
Requirements
- Experience managing engineering teams, including hiring, coaching, and performance management.
- Strong software engineering background in backend or distributed systems.
- Experience designing and operating production services in rapidly scaling cloud environments (AWS or similar).
- Proven track record of leading teams to ship complex projects in fast-paced environments.
- Strong product judgment and ability to translate user problems into technical priorities.
- Clear communication skills and ability to collaborate effectively across teams.
- Experience with languages such as Rust, Python, or Go.
