As the U.S. enters a new capex supercycle, joining PermitFlow means building the core AI infrastructure that will drive future reindustrialization. We are seeking a Staff/Principal Engineer to develop our core AI Assistant, its supporting infrastructure, and workflow agents, requiring both UX and technical expertise in a complex domain.
Responsibilities
- Own the agent architecture, including reasoning loop, planning, state management, and recovery strategies.
- Build the context layer for managing project documents, requirements, and customer-specific data.
- Design the action surface, defining tools, permissions, and human-in-the-loop checkpoints.
- Develop evaluation harnesses to measure task completion and failure modes, driving agent quality improvements.
- Establish abstractions, SDKs, and review standards for agentic feature development.
- Engage with customers to understand real-world agent performance and inform system design.
Requirements
- Shipped an assistant or agentic product at meaningful scale.
- Deep, current knowledge of the agentic stack (tool calling, context engineering, memory, retrieval, orchestration).
- Experience building effective evaluation harnesses for AI systems.
- Strong software engineering skills with experience owning production services.
- Demonstrated judgment, working code, and clear writing for influence.
- 10+ years of software engineering experience, with recent focus on LLM-powered products.
