About the job
OpenRouter is seeking a Software Engineer for its Ori product family, which focuses on building client-side tools for enterprise adoption of OpenRouter. This role involves developing products that allow users to interact with AI models through their terminal, Slack, and desktop. You will work closely with a small, agile team led by a co-founder, collaborating with product, design, and platform teams. This is a hands-on individual contributor position with significant autonomy and direct impact on shipping features.
Responsibilities
- Build and ship features across all Ori surfaces, including the CLI and its integrations.
- Implement model fungibility, enabling seamless model switching, provider fallbacks, and model-specific tuning without requiring extra user authentication.
- Develop the underlying agent runtime, including sandboxed agents, secrets management, session management, and skill inheritance.
- Deploy, fork, and manage agents in the cloud, ensuring version-controlled and auditable agent state.
- Own end-to-end quality, from installation and authentication to reliability and evaluation.
- Contribute to OpenRouter's API and SDKs by identifying and addressing gaps exposed by Ori, enabling the ecosystem to build multi-model agents.
Requirements
- 5+ years of experience shipping production software, with ownership of developer tools, CLIs, agent products, or their infrastructure.
- Daily fluency with coding agents such as Claude Code, Codex, OpenCode, Pi, or Hermes.
- Solid understanding of agent mechanics, including tool calling, context management, prompt caching, and evaluations.
- Strong systems judgment for safe agent operation, including sandboxing, process isolation, secrets management, and multi-user reliability.
- High agency and a bias for action, with experience engaging users, prototyping, shipping, and iterating in a fluid team environment.
- Product taste for developer tools, with attention to interaction details and user experience.
