About the job

OpenAI is seeking a Workday Engineer to join its People Systems team. This role is crucial for designing, building, and operating the systems that support critical people workflows, including HR, recruiting, payroll, benefits, and performance operations. The position requires a blend of strong Workday expertise and engineering fluency, focusing on building reliable integrations, improving system architecture, and automating complex workflows. You will connect Workday to internal tools, external platforms, and emerging AI-driven systems, going beyond basic configuration to solve ambiguous systems problems and develop technical solutions using modern developer workflows and Git-based environments. Collaboration with cross-functional teams across People, Finance, Security, and Engineering is key to building secure, scalable, and practical systems, involving both the improvement of existing infrastructure and the creation of new capabilities.

Responsibilities

  • Design, build, and maintain Workday integrations, applications, and workflow automations across domains like payroll, benefits, recruiting, performance, and case management.
  • Improve the reliability, quality, and scalability of People systems through strong engineering, testing, and operational practices.
  • Build technical solutions that connect Workday with internal platforms, external vendors, and AI-powered tooling.
  • Contribute to agentic internal workflows by designing systems that combine HR data, automation, orchestration, and intelligent tooling.
  • Utilize Git-based development practices, code review, and structured change management for safe delivery in a fast-moving environment.
  • Employ CLI-based tools and developer workflows to efficiently build, test, troubleshoot, and support production systems.
  • Partner with stakeholders across People, Finance, Security, and Engineering to translate business needs into durable technical solutions.
  • Establish and elevate standards for observability, security, supportability, and long-term maintainability across the People systems stack.

Requirements

  • 5-10 years of experience in Workday engineering, integrations, platform automation, or adjacent systems engineering roles.
  • Strong hands-on experience with Workday technologies including EIB, Studio, Cloud Connect, Extend, reporting, calculated fields, security, and business process design.
  • Proven track record of building technical solutions beyond administration or configuration, including automation, scripting, debugging, and systems design.
  • Comfort working in Git-based environments with modern software development practices.
  • Strong fluency with CLI-based workflows and developer tools.
  • Experience designing and supporting production integrations with a high bar for reliability, security, and data quality.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and ability to navigate ambiguous technical and operational challenges.
  • Ability to work effectively with both technical and non-technical partners.
  • Interest in agentic systems, AI-enabled internal tooling, or LLM-powered workflow design.
