About the job
OpenAI is seeking a Technical Operations Analyst to join its User Safety & Risk Operations (USRO) team. This role focuses on solving complex operational challenges using data, technical tools, and sound judgment. You will work as an individual contributor, taking ownership of problems from definition through analysis, workflow design, implementation, measurement, and handoff. The scope is broad, encompassing emerging risk detection, operational quality, automation, and launch readiness, with the flexibility to adapt to evolving organizational needs. This is a hands-on position requiring comfort with data querying, dashboard creation, lightweight automation, and utilizing AI tools to enhance efficiency. You will collaborate closely with operators and technical partners to transform incomplete information into practical, effective systems. Responsibilities may also include monitoring data and operational issues for major cloud deployment partnerships, validating pipelines, investigating anomalies, and improving reporting mechanisms.
Responsibilities
- Scope ambiguous operational problems and emerging risks, translating them into analyses, workflows, tools, or decision systems.
- Analyze large datasets to identify patterns, data quality gaps, operational blind spots, and source-of-truth issues.
- Build and maintain dashboards, monitoring, alerts, recurring reporting, and workflow automations.
- Develop systems for detecting and assessing emerging risks, including classifier, evaluation, labeling, and human-review feedback loops.
- Support cloud deployments and partnerships by validating data pipelines and safety signals, investigating anomalies, and improving operational monitoring and reporting.
- Design practical quality controls such as sampling plans, golden datasets, validation holdouts, thresholds, and human review.
- Utilize AI and LLM-based tools to improve speed and scale, applying appropriate testing, quality assurance, and human oversight.
- Translate technical and operational findings into clear recommendations for partner teams.
- Partner across various teams (Operations, Product, Engineering, Data Science, Policy, Safety, Legal, Support) to define ownership and requirements.
- Document system logic, limitations, operating procedures, and maintenance expectations.
Requirements
- 5+ years of experience in technical operations, data analytics, trust and safety, risk operations, product operations, or a related field.
- Proficiency in SQL and experience working with unfamiliar datasets, schemas, joins, and data quality issues.
- Proven experience building and owning practical dashboards, tools, automations, or operating systems from scoping through maintenance.
- Ability to use AI and LLM tools to accelerate workflows, validate outputs, and manage failure modes.
- Understanding of how to measure technical or operational systems using concepts like precision, recall, coverage, error analysis, and quality assurance.
- Sound judgment in scaled operations, including queues, escalations, reviewer workflows, capacity, quality, and incident response.
- Ability to move quickly in ambiguous environments, make thoughtful tradeoffs, and create structure.
- Strong communication skills to convey complex findings to technical, operational, and leadership audiences.
- Ability to drive work through cross-functional partners.
