The Scaled Abuse team at OpenAI is responsible for protecting the company's products and customers by detecting, preventing, and responding to fraudulent and abusive behavior at scale. This role involves building and operating backend and data systems that power real-time detection, investigation workflows, and enforcement. The work requires a blend of engineering and abuse expertise, partnering with various teams to understand attack patterns and harden defenses. The ideal candidate is comfortable with ambiguity, can quickly learn new codebases, and can propose pragmatic improvements to enhance system resilience.
Responsibilities
- Design and build systems for fraud detection and remediation, balancing fraud loss, implementation cost, and customer experience.
- Collaborate with finance, security, product, research, and trust & safety operations to combat fraudulent and abusive actors.
- Stay updated on the latest techniques and tools to proactively address fraud and abuse.
- Utilize GPT-5 and future models to enhance fraud and abuse combatting efforts.
Requirements
- At least 5 years of software engineering experience in backend and data systems.
- At least 2 years of experience in fraud or abuse analysis, investigation, and/or operations.
- Ability to quickly understand and intuit complex codebases and suggest improvements.
- Strong desire to learn and share information clearly and concisely.
- Comfort with ambiguity and rapidly changing conditions.
- Experience with Machine Learning techniques is a plus.
