OpenAI is seeking an experienced backend software engineer to join the Enterprise Controls & Console team. This role will focus on building the permissions, governance, and administration capabilities that empower organizations to use OpenAI products with confidence. You will be responsible for designing and implementing systems that provide granular controls over access and security, ensuring that people and agents operate within defined organizational boundaries. This position involves complex backend platform engineering, touching on enterprise product needs and influencing major product and model launches. You will lead technical design and delivery, translate ambiguous enterprise needs into clear system behavior, and remain hands-on throughout the implementation and production operation lifecycle.
Responsibilities
- Design and build backend services for permissions, authorization, and governance across OpenAI products.
- Develop sharing capabilities with clear access rules and enterprise controls.
- Build reusable services and APIs for workspace administration and console experiences.
- Lead architecture and delivery for complex initiatives, aligning stakeholders on requirements and tradeoffs.
- Translate enterprise needs into clear configuration and maintainable systems.
- Own the reliability, security, and performance of shipped services through testing and production debugging.
Requirements
- 9+ years of professional backend software engineering experience building and operating production services.
- Deep backend engineering expertise and a track record of shipping complex product or platform capabilities.
- Experience providing technical leadership for substantial initiatives, making architectural decisions, and coordinating delivery.
- Strong proficiency in a backend language such as Python, Go, Rust, Java, or C++.
- Experience designing distributed services, APIs, and data models.
- Experience building authorization, permissions, or enterprise governance systems.
- Strong product judgment and communication skills.
- Track record of owning production systems and improving security, testing, and reliability.
