The editor will be responsible for shaping the external communication of technical safety efforts, identifying key narratives, and ensuring accuracy and accessibility in public-facing materials like system cards, blogs, and governance documents. This is a hands-on position requiring deep ownership, accountability, and the ability to combine exceptional editorial judgment with a builder's mindset, using AI not just for drafting but for rethinking and scaling the transparency process.
Responsibilities
- Serve as the narrative lead for system cards and related transparency artifacts from initiation to publication.
- Partner with various teams (Safety Programs, researchers, legal, communications, etc.) to translate technical findings into public-facing materials.
- Write clear, precise explanations of highly technical safety topics for external audiences, maintaining rigor and nuance.
- Shape the editorial structure and narrative arc of transparency artifacts to accurately communicate OpenAI's safety measures and remaining uncertainties.
- Exercise strong editorial judgment to determine necessary context, caveats, and supporting evidence for public understanding.
- Improve repeatable editorial processes, templates, and publication workflows.
- Utilize AI tools to accelerate drafting, synthesize information, identify precedents, and enhance consistency across artifacts.
- Build systems and workflows to make transparency efforts faster, more scalable, and more effective.
- Support blogs, governance documents, and other technical safety communications as needed.
- Contribute to the evolution of the Deployment Safety Hub and related transparency surfaces.
Requirements
- Exceptional writing and editing skills, capable of making highly technical topics understandable without sacrificing precision.
- Strong editorial judgment to identify narrative threads in complex material, surface important details, and communicate uncertainty responsibly.
- Strong execution instincts and ability to own complex projects from start to finish.
- Comfort educating oneself on technical safety work across OpenAI.
- Proficiency in using AI tools for learning, drafting, workflow automation, and system building.
- Ability to partner effectively with diverse stakeholders including researchers, legal, and communications teams.
- Mindset of a builder, with an inclination to invest in creating systems that improve efficiency and scalability.
