OpenAI is seeking a Research and Advisory Partnerships Lead to build and manage relationships and advisory structures that integrate independent external expertise into product and policy decisions. This role is crucial for strengthening how AI is developed and deployed by engaging researchers, civil society organizations, and subject-matter experts. The position involves establishing advisory councils, fostering research partnerships with academia, and translating external insights into actionable guidance for internal teams. It sits at the intersection of product, policy, research, and governance, requiring someone adept at cross-disciplinary relationship building and process design to ensure external expertise effectively informs decision-making.

Responsibilities

  • Develop, launch, and manage external advisory councils and governance mechanisms for structured input on product and policy.
  • Build and maintain relationships with external experts, researchers, and organizations to inform product and policy decisions.
  • Identify opportunities for external consultation to improve internal decision-making and develop tailored engagement strategies.
  • Design and manage research partnerships with academic institutions and independent researchers, focusing on social science and AI's real-world impacts.
  • Stay current on academic research and translate relevant findings into practical recommendations for product, policy, and leadership teams.
  • Collaborate with internal teams (product, policy, safety, legal, research, communications) to identify opportunities for external input.
  • Develop processes for collecting, synthesizing, and sharing external guidance, and tracking its influence on internal decisions.
  • Manage operational aspects of external engagements, including scopes of work, contracts, budgets, and research governance.
  • Prepare briefing materials and recommendations for senior leaders on external perspectives and research findings.
  • Represent the company in research, academic, and stakeholder forums, building trusted relationships.

Requirements

  • Experience building and managing external partnerships, advisory bodies, stakeholder engagement programs, or research collaborations in technology, academia, government, or civil society.
  • Strong understanding of the social, ethical, and policy questions associated with AI and emerging technologies.
  • Familiarity with social science research and ability to engage with researchers across disciplines (sociology, psychology, economics, political science, HCI).
  • Ability to translate complex external perspectives and research findings into clear, actionable guidance for technical, product, and policy teams.
  • Experience building trust with external stakeholders while maintaining clarity on engagement purpose, scope, and limitations.
  • Experience working independently in a fast-moving environment and collaborating effectively across teams.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, including experience preparing briefings for senior decision-makers.
  • Motivation to ensure external expertise shapes responsible AI development and deployment.
  • Experience working on product policy, trust and safety, responsible AI, or technology governance.
