About the job
OpenAI's Payments team is building the financial infrastructure that makes our products accessible to consumers and enterprises globally. This role will lead design for one of our most foundational product areas: the payments and monetization infrastructure. You will partner closely with product, engineering, and cross-functional teams to shape how customers understand, manage, and pay for entirely new kinds of AI usage. Your work will extend beyond traditional checkout and billing, helping to define systems, frameworks, and experiences for durable pay-as-you-go models, Codex usage, and agentic workflows. As a product designer in a highly ambiguous and rapidly evolving space, you will influence both product strategy and the underlying infrastructure that OpenAI products depend on.
Responsibilities
- Lead design direction for payments, billing, and monetization experiences across OpenAI's consumer and enterprise products.
- Design and ship high-quality, end-to-end product experiences, from early concepts to production-ready designs.
- Shape infrastructure and product frameworks for emerging AI usage models like pay-as-you-go, Codex usage, and agentic work.
- Partner with engineering, product management, finance, and design peers to define platform strategy, influence the roadmap, and prioritize execution.
- Translate complex platform dependencies, financial logic, and technical constraints into clear, trustworthy, and scalable user experiences.
- Engage in user research to understand customer behavior around pricing, usage tracking, billing management, and purchasing decisions.
- Contribute to and evolve design systems, patterns, and principles for consistency in payments and monetization.
- Help establish the design culture for a growing, foundational product area.
Requirements
- Strong systems thinker capable of connecting user experiences to platform, business logic, and technical architecture.
- Experience designing complex, infrastructure-adjacent, platform, or enterprise product experiences.
- Strong UX/UI and interaction design skills with a high bar for quality, clarity, and craft.
- Comfortable leading ambiguous product areas, developing vision, and shaping roadmaps with partners.
- Ability to clearly explain complex decisions and tradeoffs to technical, business, and design stakeholders.
- Enjoy solving problems where scalability, reliability, and long-term product coherence are critical.
- Excited by defining how customers understand and pay for emerging AI products and behaviors.
- Experience with payments, billing, pricing, monetization, or usage-based products, or eagerness to apply strong platform-design experience to these challenges.
- Ability to work within, improve, and contribute to a shared design system.
