The ChatGPT Learning team is building the next generation of learning experiences within ChatGPT, aiming to support sustained learning and progress beyond individual questions. This role involves leading the design and development of products that leverage AI to make powerful learning tools more accessible, helping millions of users understand the world, develop skills, and pursue their goals. The work combines product engineering, design, AI research, and education to serve learners globally. As a Principal Software Engineer, you will be hands-on across the full stack, building polished interfaces and scalable backend services, and driving product and design decisions with cross-functional partners to translate ambiguous opportunities into clear direction and successful product launches.
Responsibilities
- Lead end-to-end development of learning experiences in ChatGPT, from exploration to production.
- Drive product and design decisions with product managers and designers, providing technical insight and judgment.
- Set technical direction and guide architecture decisions for complex initiatives.
- Build multimodal learning capabilities integrating text, images, voice, and interactive interfaces.
- Develop scalable services and APIs to support learning features.
- Prototype ideas and integrate new AI capabilities with researchers, platform teams, and engineers.
- Improve performance, reliability, and usability of learning surfaces using experiments and user feedback.
- Mentor other engineers through code reviews and technical guidance.
Requirements
- 10+ years of software engineering experience with a track record of shipping high-quality full-stack products.
- Experience leading complex technical initiatives and making architecture decisions balancing product needs, development speed, and maintainability.
- Experience driving product and design decisions in close partnership with product managers and designers.
- Enjoy building consumer products and taking ownership from concept to production.
- Ability to bring clarity to ambiguous problems and translate them into practical product solutions.
- Strong product engineering instincts and a focus on user experience quality.
- Experience building interactive educational tools or learning products.
- Experience developing AI-powered applications or systems built around large language models.
