OpenAI is seeking a Model Policy Manager to shape model behavior for U.S. government use, with a specific focus on national security applications. This role involves defining nuanced policies and translating them into actionable training and evaluation criteria. The goal is to help models navigate high-stakes scenarios effectively while maintaining their usefulness and capabilities. This position is based in our San Francisco office and operates on a hybrid model, requiring three days in the office per week with flexibility for remote work on Thursdays and Fridays. Relocation support is available for new employees.

Responsibilities

  • Develop model policies to guide safe and useful behavior.
  • Build evaluations to identify policy gaps and model failures.
  • Use evaluation findings to improve policies and training.
  • Collaborate with research, engineering, and domain experts to support safe and reliable model deployment.

Requirements

  • Relevant experience in AI safety, policy, or risk assessment.
  • Strong judgment with the ability to translate complex safety questions into clear, practical policies.
  • Technical fluency to work hands-on with model data and evaluations.
  • Motivation by OpenAI’s mission and the responsible use of AI in safety-critical settings.
  • Active TS/SCI clearance or equivalent is preferred but not required.
