OpenAI is seeking a Manager, Applied AI Engineering to lead the team responsible for the technical success of strategic technology and software customers in the Americas. This role involves leading a team of Applied AI Engineers who work hands-on with customers to design, build, evaluate, and scale AI applications. The manager will set the team's strategy and operating model, coach engineers, and act as a senior technical partner to customers and internal stakeholders. Success will be measured by meaningful production applications, sustained adoption, strong customer outcomes, and technical insights that can be applied broadly.
Responsibilities
- Own the strategy and operating model for the Digital Natives Applied AI Engineering team.
- Lead, hire, mentor, and develop a team of Applied AI Engineers.
- Guide the team in working with customers to identify use cases, build AI applications, solve technical challenges, and scale solutions into production.
- Partner with Sales to prioritize technical engagement and drive customer adoption and growth.
- Serve as a senior technical partner and escalation point for priority customers.
- Synthesize customer insights for Product, Engineering, and Research teams.
- Translate customer needs into repeatable technical patterns, reference architectures, and best practices.
- Coach Applied AI Engineers on technical quality, customer judgment, and communication.
- Help customers understand and apply OpenAI's newest capabilities.
- Champion the safe, reliable, and effective application of OpenAI's technology.
Requirements
- 8+ years of experience in customer-facing technical roles (applied engineering, solutions architecture, etc.).
- 2+ years of experience leading technical teams.
- Experience building or deploying generative AI, machine learning, developer platforms, or cloud-based software solutions in production.
- Strong technical depth across APIs, AI/ML systems, application architecture, cloud infrastructure, and developer workflows.
- Hands-on software engineering experience with languages like Python or JavaScript.
- Comfort working with highly technical teams and executive stakeholders.
- Ability to translate ambiguous problems into clear technical approaches.
- Strong judgment for balancing individual customer challenges with broader solutions.
- Effective communication skills for complex technical and business topics.
- Ability to thrive in ambiguous, fast-moving environments.
