About the job
OpenAI is seeking an IT Software Architect to join the SaaS and Software Governance team. This role is crucial for scaling OpenAI's IT infrastructure from startup-speed tooling to a mature enterprise architecture. You will shape the architecture for software, SaaS, data integration, and agent-enabled workflows, focusing on improving security, reducing software sprawl, and enabling business teams to move faster. This is a hands-on role that partners with various business and IT teams to guide software decisions, build reusable foundations, and transform software governance into an enterprise capability that enhances speed, reliability, and security.
Responsibilities
- Own the target architecture for enterprise software, SaaS, integrations, APIs, and agent-enabled business systems.
- Drive deprecation and consolidation of enterprise software targets.
- Build lightweight governance patterns to guide software and integration decisions.
- Create architecture standards for identity, access, data movement, API usage, auditability, and vendor integration.
- Partner with Security to ensure software architecture addresses security requirements like SSO, MFA, data residency, and incident response.
- Collaborate with Procurement and Finance on renewals, rationalization, and build-versus-buy decisions.
- Partner with application verticals to evaluate agentic business workflows and translate them into enterprise system patterns.
- Review proposed SaaS and internally built tools for overlap, risk, integration quality, and long-term fit.
- Develop reusable architecture blueprints for common capabilities.
- Define where OpenAI-native GPT or agent-built solutions can replace or enable traditional SaaS tools.
- Create clear decision records and architecture artifacts.
- Drive software catalog maturity by connecting tool inventory, business owner, system owner, integration path, and risk posture.
Requirements
- 10+ years of experience in enterprise architecture, business systems architecture, IT architecture, SaaS governance, integration architecture, or a related technical leadership role.
- Strong understanding of SaaS operating models, software lifecycle management, software asset management, and vendor/platform governance.
- Experience designing integrations across systems, including large-scale SaaS platforms like CRM, ERP, and marketplaces.
- Practical knowledge of identity and access patterns (SSO, OIDC, SAML, SCIM, RBAC/ABAC, privileged admin models, service accounts, OAuth apps, token governance).
- Ability to evaluate software from multiple perspectives: business value, architecture fit, security, data exposure, cost, supportability, user experience, and vendor strategy.
- Comfort operating in ambiguity and building structure.
- Ability to influence senior stakeholders without relying solely on formal authority.
- Skill in writing clear architecture decision records, governance standards, system diagrams, business cases, and executive recommendations.
- Strong partner orientation to help teams move faster while improving decision quality.
- Curiosity about AI-native enterprise architecture and the application of GPT and agentic workflows.
