OpenAI is seeking a Forward Deployed Engineer (FDE) to lead end-to-end deployments of AI models within healthcare organizations. This role involves partnering with customers to integrate AI systems into clinical, operational, and member-facing workflows, translating complex requirements into production-ready solutions. You will own the technical discovery, architecture, implementation, evaluation, and handoff, measuring success through production adoption and measurable workflow impact. This position requires close collaboration with customer technical teams and internal OpenAI partners, with a focus on delivering solutions and driving product improvements based on deployment learnings. The role is based in San Francisco and requires a hybrid work model.
Responsibilities
- Own the technical solution end-to-end, from customer discovery and workflow scoping through architecture, hands-on implementation, evaluation, production deployment, adoption, and handoff.
- Partner with customer engineers and operators to frame problems, define scope, and translate workflows into technical requirements and measurable outcomes.
- Design and implement production AI applications and agentic systems integrating with customer infrastructure, APIs, data platforms, EHRs, and operational tools.
- Build with safeguards for PHI, HIPAA, privacy, security, authorization, governance, and auditability.
- Define and operationalize evaluations, validation evidence, human-review workflows, escalation paths, and launch criteria.
- Use evaluation results, error analysis, observability, and customer feedback to improve system reliability, performance, model selection, and production readiness.
- Distill deployment learnings into reference architectures, interoperability patterns, evaluation harnesses, security controls, and reusable technical primitives.
Requirements
- 6+ years of software engineering, ML/AI engineering, solutions engineering, or technical consulting experience.
- Experience as a senior engineer, tech lead, or deployment owner making technical decisions in ambiguous environments.
- Hands-on experience owning technical discovery, architecture, implementation, evaluation, and productionization for complex customer-facing or enterprise systems.
- Healthcare experience including payer workflows, provider operations, EHR systems, or interoperability standards (e.g., Epic, HL7, FHIR).
- Exposure to provider or health-system workflows (e.g., clinical operations, revenue cycle management) or EHR and interoperability technologies.
- Experience shipping complex systems as a forward deployed engineer, customer engineer, or in a similar role at a healthcare technology company.
- Strong judgment in AI evaluation, privacy, security, governance, and reliability.
