OpenAI's Life Sciences team is building Rosalind Workbench, a central environment that integrates scientific tools, data sources, and workflows to accelerate research and leverage AI for scientific discovery. This role is for an Engineering Manager to lead the team developing Rosalind Workbench and its supporting infrastructure. You will be responsible for hiring and developing engineers, setting technical direction, and delivering on an ambitious product roadmap. This is a hands-on leadership position requiring comfort with code and architecture reviews, debugging complex issues, and guiding engineers in making critical technical decisions. You will collaborate closely with product, design, research, and customer-facing teams to bring new scientific capabilities to life.
Responsibilities
- Build and lead the engineering team, including hiring, coaching, and establishing accountability.
- Drive technical planning and delivery by translating scientific and customer needs into scoped milestones and managing tradeoffs.
- Shape the Workbench architecture, guiding development across scientific interfaces, agent orchestration, compute, and state management.
- Ensure scientific work is inspectable and reproducible by preserving inputs, versions, results, and decisions.
- Own engineering quality in production, establishing testing, release practices, observability, and on-call processes.
- Coordinate across teams and partners, aligning on platform capabilities and deployment needs.
- Translate customer learning into reusable improvements, addressing enterprise requirements for private compute, networking, and data handling.
- Connect product engineering with research, turning internal research capabilities into supported product features.
- Build safety and trust into the product by partnering with security, privacy, and safety teams on access controls and auditability.
Requirements
- Experience managing engineering teams that ship and operate complex software products.
- Strong software engineering fundamentals and technical judgment across applications, services, data systems, and infrastructure.
- Experience turning early prototypes or research capabilities into reliable external products.
- Ability to create clarity in ambiguous situations and communicate technical decisions plainly.
- Commitment to product usability and translating expert workflows into understandable software.
- Experience building teams where engineers take ownership, learn quickly, and maintain high standards.
- Motivation for scientific discovery and willingness to learn from domain experts.
- Experience with scientific software, computational biology, bioinformatics, chemistry, or laboratory workflows.
- Experience with AI agents, model inference, tool integrations, or evaluation infrastructure.
- Experience with workflow orchestration, long-running jobs, reproducible computation, or artifact versioning.
- Experience with enterprise software deployed with private data, customer-managed infrastructure, and organizational access controls.
- Experience with developer platforms for building, validating, and sharing reusable tools or workflows.
