OpenAI is seeking an Engineering Manager to lead the Online Data Systems team, which is responsible for building and operating the company's in-house database and indexing technology. This role involves guiding a team of engineers focused on hyperscale data storage and retrieval, crucial for supporting production AI applications like ChatGPT and Codex. The position offers the opportunity to shape the future of large-scale data infrastructure, moving beyond minor optimizations to make significant contributions to the company's technological direction.

Responsibilities

  • Build, lead, and grow high-performing infrastructure engineering teams.
  • Drive the evolution of OpenAI’s in-house online data technologies, including core database systems, indexing technologies, and vector search.
  • Anchor delivery around measurable reliability goals (SLOs, etc.) to ensure system performance and resiliency.
  • Champion the pragmatic use of agent technology to enhance execution velocity.
  • Reduce operational toil and incident frequency through improved abstractions, guardrails, and self-healing systems.

Requirements

  • Demonstrated spirit for operational excellence, including hands-on experience building and operating infrastructure with strict reliability, latency, and security requirements.
  • Experience managing data-intensive software engineering teams in intense, demanding environments.
  • Deep hands-on understanding of database, indexing, storage, and distributed systems technologies.
  • Ability to modulate technical engagement to empower a highly technical team to lead and grow.
  • Demonstrable track record of hiring, developing, and retaining senior engineers.
