About the job
We are seeking a hands-on Engineering Manager to lead a small, fast-moving team focused on building AI-powered automation systems that will redefine how work is accomplished across OpenAI. This role is at the nexus of applied AI, research, and product engineering, where you will guide a team that develops systems capable of learning from humans and managing real workloads across various departments like sales, support, and finance. You will remain deeply involved in the technical aspects of the work, operating in a highly iterative environment. This position offers significant ownership for individuals eager to build foundational systems from scratch, collaborate closely with customers, and influence the future of AI in operational work at scale.
Responsibilities
- Lead and develop a small team focused on building applied AI systems for internal operations.
- Design and construct AI-powered automation systems in close collaboration with customers.
- Maintain hands-on involvement in architecture and implementation across the full technology stack.
- Develop adaptable systems encompassing developer tools, automation platforms, knowledge graphs, and data systems.
- Deploy systems directly to internal users and customers to facilitate rapid iteration based on real-world feedback.
- Engage regularly with scaled workforces to understand their needs and validate proposed solutions.
- Establish systems for visibility and learning within hybrid workforces.
- Collaborate daily with product, research, and operations teams.
Requirements
- 12+ years of engineering experience, with at least 3 years in engineering management and 7 years as an individual contributor.
- Proven ability as a hands-on builder comfortable working across the entire technology stack.
- Extensive experience in applying AI, with a readiness to explore frontier approaches.
- Strong technical judgment in systems design, infrastructure, and full-stack development.
- Experience building developer tools, internal platforms, or workflow automation systems.
- Enjoyment of frequent customer interaction and thriving in feedback-driven development cycles.
- Comfort with ambiguity and enthusiasm for operating in a rapidly evolving field.
- Experience in operationally complex environments such as logistics, support systems, internal tooling, or warehouse automation.
