OpenAI is seeking an experienced Performance Engineer to enhance the performance, reliability, and efficiency of its critical systems, including ChatGPT and the OpenAI API. This highly technical, individual contributor role involves optimizing infrastructure and application-level performance across various layers, from networking and storage to Python runtime and GPU utilization. You will develop tooling for performance observability, collaborate with cross-functional teams to set performance goals, and influence architectural decisions to prioritize latency, throughput, and cost-efficiency at scale. The role focuses on root-cause analysis, profiling, instrumentation, and driving systemic improvements to address performance regressions and scalability issues.
Responsibilities
- Analyze and optimize performance across application, middleware, runtime, and infrastructure layers.
- Develop tooling and metrics for deep observability into system performance.
- Collaborate with infra, platform, training, and product teams to identify performance goals and drive improvements.
- Influence architecture and design decisions to prioritize latency, throughput, and efficiency.
- Lead investigations into production performance regressions or scalability issues.
- Drive performance testing strategies and define SLAs/SLOs for critical systems.
Requirements
- 7+ years of experience in software engineering with a strong track record in performance or reliability of high-scale distributed systems.
- Deep comfort with performance profiling tools and tracing systems.
- Experience optimizing performance across database, networking, storage, application runtime, GC tuning, Python/Golang internals, or GPU utilization.
- Strong understanding of OS internals, scheduling, memory management, and IO patterns.
- Experience contributing to observability, benchmarking, or performance-focused infrastructure at scale.
- Demonstrated success navigating ambiguity and aligning stakeholders around performance goals.
- Value simplicity, rigor, and collaboration when solving complex systems problems.
