OpenAI for Financial Services is seeking backend engineers to build the systems that make advanced AI useful, reliable, and trustworthy in financial services. You will develop data systems, agentic workflows, and enterprise integrations for our products, and help deploy them at major financial institutions. This is a product-focused role with significant ownership, allowing you to shape new products from inception, engage directly with customers to understand their needs, and collaborate across OpenAI to transform model capabilities into trusted products for high-stakes professional work.
Responsibilities
- Design and build backend systems for AI-native financial workflows across ChatGPT Work and Codex.
- Develop infrastructure for ingesting, indexing, retrieving, and serving financial data, company filings, market information, and firm-specific knowledge at scale.
- Create integrations with financial data providers, enterprise knowledge systems, and customer environments, including necessary authentication, authorization, and entitlements.
- Build systems enabling models and agents to utilize appropriate tools and data, maintain source provenance, and generate accurate, verifiable outputs.
- Enhance the reliability, latency, observability, and quality of production systems, and create evaluations for real-world financial workflow performance.
- Engage with financial institutions to understand customer needs, resolve deployment blockers, and translate feedback into product improvements.
- Collaborate with product, design, research, security, and other engineering teams to transition new capabilities from prototype to scaled production.
Requirements
- 5+ years of professional software engineering experience, with a proven track record in building and operating production backend systems.
- Proficiency in at least one backend language (e.g., Python, Go, Rust, TypeScript) with a strong understanding of APIs, data systems, and distributed systems.
- Experience building data-intensive applications, search or retrieval systems, infrastructure platforms, or complex integrations.
- Strong product sense and ability to translate ambiguous customer problems into practical, well-engineered solutions.
- Willingness to work across the stack and organizational boundaries to ship products.
- High standards for reliability, security, privacy, and performance, especially in enterprise or high-trust environments.
- Interest in AI and its application to complex professional work; direct AI/ML or financial services experience is beneficial but not mandatory.
- Experience as a founder, early startup engineer, or building a new product from scratch is a plus.
