About the job
We are seeking an Applied AI Engineer to collaborate with strategic partners in designing, building, evaluating, and launching high-utility plugins for ChatGPT and Codex. This hands-on, partner-facing role involves contributing to the platform, leading partner engagements, and translating product needs into production-ready integrations. You will work closely with various internal teams at OpenAI and external partner teams to identify use cases, prototype solutions, debug issues, and guide partners through the entire plugin lifecycle. The ideal candidate is a product-minded engineer who enjoys coding, reliability, evaluations, and developer experience, aiming to help partners ship genuinely useful plugins.
Responsibilities
- Own the technical partner journey for priority B2B plugins from initial assessment through launch and maintenance.
- Identify strong plugin use cases and define user journeys that leverage ChatGPT or Codex for meaningful user value.
- Write production code, build prototypes, and create technical guidance and debugging tools for partners.
- Debug issues across partner and OpenAI systems, including API contracts, authentication, tool invocation, and performance.
- Review partner architectures and implementations for API design, data handling, safety, privacy, and reliability.
- Contribute fixes and improvements to ChatGPT, Codex, and the plugins platform, including APIs, SDKs, and internal tooling.
- Collaborate with internal teams to ensure smooth and repeatable partner launches.
- Gather structured feedback from partners to inform product and engineering roadmaps and create reusable playbooks.
Requirements
- 4-6 years of professional software engineering experience.
- Strong technical skills to contribute to the platform and enjoy hands-on coding.
- Experience building and operating production APIs, backend services, developer platforms, or integrations.
- Ability to reason across frontend, backend, authentication, reliability, privacy, evaluations, and UX constraints.
- Strong product sense to distinguish functional plugins from genuinely useful ones.
- Clear communication skills with external engineers, product leaders, executives, and internal stakeholders.
- Ability to make ambiguous partner ideas concrete through prototypes, specs, and guidance.
- Comfortable reading unfamiliar code, making platform changes, and debugging distributed systems.
- Deep care for user trust, privacy, data handling, and product quality in AI experiences.
- Ability to balance urgency with judgment and maintain precision on important details.
Benefits
- Hybrid work model (3 days in office per week).
- Relocation assistance for new employees.
