About the job
The Applied AI Engineering team is responsible for the safe and effective deployment of generative AI applications for developers and enterprises. As an Applied AI Engineer in the Digital Native segment, you will work with industry-leading technology companies to bring new AI capabilities into their products. You will partner directly with experienced product and engineering teams to turn frontier model capabilities into new features and agentic experiences, combining rapid experimentation with the demands of established products. This role involves deep technical judgment, hands-on engineering, and customer leadership to take ambitious ideas from use-case selection through production launch and scale, influencing how OpenAI's products evolve.
Responsibilities
- Embed with sophisticated platform customers as a technical thought partner for building novel applications on the API.
- Forge relationships with CTOs and AI leaders to ensure successful application deployment at scale.
- Provide guidance to customers on maximizing business impact and accelerating time to value.
- Build prototypes and evaluations with customer teams to test product ideas and guide architecture.
- Collaborate with Product and Research teams to validate frontier AI capabilities and provide feedback.
- Scale the Applied AI Engineer function by sharing knowledge and best practices.
- Evaluate emerging AI capabilities and translate advances into practical recommendations.
- Work with customer teams through workshops and implementation sessions to resolve technical challenges.
Requirements
- 8+ years of deep, hands-on technical experience and eagerness to work closely with customers.
- Track record of leading complex, production-scale AI/ML systems from discovery through deployment and impact.
- Passion for the latest AI industry trends, including agent architecture, prompt engineering, evaluation frameworks, safety, and security.
- Proficiency in Python, JavaScript, TypeScript, or similar languages.
- Comfort building production-quality prototypes and reference implementations.
- Strong technical judgment and ability to make clear recommendations with incomplete information.
- Humble attitude and eagerness to help others with empathy.
- High horsepower, adeptness at context switching, and ability to work on multiple projects with expansive ownership.
- Ability to thrive in dynamic environments and navigate ambiguity.
