About the job
As an AI Architect, you will be the senior technical owner for a named portfolio of customers within the public sector, serving as the primary technical counterpart to their leadership teams. Your role involves shaping each customer's AI strategy and guiding their journey from initial discovery and solution evaluation through deployment, adoption, and ultimately, measurable mission impact. You will own the technical account plan across various OpenAI offerings, translating mission priorities into a focused use-case portfolio, an actionable adoption roadmap, and a clear path to durable customer value. While the Account Director leads the overall account strategy and relationship, you will spearhead the technical strategy, customer journey, and path to production impact, remaining accountable for technical outcomes and coordinating specialists as needed.
Responsibilities

- Partner with Account Directors on account strategy while owning the technical account plan, milestones, and adoption priorities.
- Lead discovery with agency leaders to identify and prioritize use cases tied to mission and operational outcomes.
- Develop Applied AI Architectures spanning models, applications, data, integration, identity, security, privacy, governance, evaluation, and deployment.
- Guide customers through technical evaluations, demonstrations, workshops, and proofs of value.
- Help customers navigate security, compliance, governance, and deployment requirements for AI adoption in the public sector.
- Maintain a focused use-case portfolio with clear decision criteria, ownership, blockers, and success measures.
- Develop trusted relationships and technical champions across customer stakeholders.
- Qualify and coordinate support from various delivery teams and partners.
- Track adoption, usage, account health, and production readiness, intervening early when risks threaten value realization.
- Apply public sector and mission expertise to recognize repeatable patterns and identify expansion opportunities.
- Share customer insights with Product, Engineering, and Research to inform product development and practices.
Requirements

- Experience working with government agencies, public institutions, or government contractors, understanding their unique considerations.
- Ability to build credibility with senior technical and government leaders, and communicate effectively with hands-on engineers.
- Strong software and cloud architecture foundations, including APIs, distributed systems, data integration, identity, security, and privacy.
- Understanding of modern AI systems, frontier models, agentic applications, model evaluation, retrieval, and enterprise AI workflows.
- Ability to prototype, explain technical tradeoffs, and work confidently with APIs, SDKs, and languages like Python or JavaScript.
- Sound judgment about when to go deep personally versus involving specialists.
- Experience developing technical account plans and prioritizing complex customer portfolios.
- Meaningful expertise in a relevant public sector mission or customer segment.
- Clear communication skills, with the ability to turn ambiguity into a practical technical narrative or action plan.
- Collaborative work style with a focus on helping public sector organizations.
