About the job
NVIDIA is seeking a Senior Software Engineering Manager to lead the development of a production-quality reinforcement learning (RL) ecosystem. This role involves building and extending RL post-training frameworks and the underlying systems that enable modern AI to reason, use tools, and act as agents. You will be responsible for setting strategy, building and managing a globally distributed team, and translating technical and customer signals into clear engineering priorities. The work spans various RL frameworks and their supporting systems, requiring deep systems expertise to ensure reliability and scalability across GPUs, CPUs, networking, and storage.
Responsibilities
- Own NVIDIA's RL post-training frameworks strategy, including investment areas and prioritization.
- Lead the engineering effort to build, extend, and harden RL frameworks and supporting systems.
- Set strategy, build the team, and convert technical and customer signals into engineering priorities.
- Evaluate architecture and performance claims across training, inference, rollout, and orchestration.
- Drive engineering work across organizational boundaries and influence without direct authority.
- Recruit, develop, and manage engineering managers and senior individual contributors.
- Establish effective operating models for distributed teams.
- Define and implement workflows, success criteria, and metrics to improve engineering execution.
- Collaborate with product management, research, DevRel, customer-facing teams, and external partners.
- Ensure delivery across open-source frameworks and distributed runtimes.
- Coach engineers to contribute credibly in open-source ecosystems.
- Turn open technical and partner questions into concrete, measurable actions and delivery goals.
- Maintain a high quality bar for all engineering work and open-source improvements.
Requirements
- MS or PhD in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or related field (or equivalent experience).
- 10+ years of software engineering experience in distributed systems, AI frameworks, ML infrastructure, HPC, or systems software.
- 4+ years of experience as an engineering manager for software teams.
- Strong technical background in distributed AI systems, with the ability to reason across training, inference, orchestration, and end-to-end performance.
- Experience defining domain-level technical strategy and making build-vs-buy or upstream-vs-internal investment decisions.
- Experience creating multi-team execution plans.
- Ability to drive engineering work across organizational boundaries and communicate tradeoffs clearly.
- Experience hiring and leading engineering teams, developing technical leaders or new managers.
- Experience creating staffing plans for evolving technical domains.
- Experience establishing workflows, success criteria, metrics, or decision gates.
- Background collaborating with open-source communities, research teams, external partners, or customer-facing teams.
