About the job
NVIDIA's LPX System Software team is seeking a Principal Software Engineer to build foundational software for a novel deterministic compute architecture. This role involves developing hardware abstraction layers, core system libraries, drivers, and runtime components, with a strong emphasis on memory safety and API stability using Rust. The position requires setting technical direction, shaping architecture, and driving complex reliability and bring-up challenges. A key aspect of this role involves leveraging AI coding agents as a primary workflow tool, requiring senior engineers to be adept at directing them and designing systems that are legible to both humans and AI.
Responsibilities
- Shape the architecture of hardware abstraction layers and core system libraries, owning API contracts.
- Design and implement drivers, runtimes, and data movement pipelines for novel silicon.
- Build runtime interfaces for launching, monitoring, and managing workloads at scale.
- Lead triage of difficult runtime failures and produce root-cause analyses.
- Partner with hardware engineering, compiler teams, and operations for new platform bring-up.
- Establish agent-assisted engineering practices, abstractions, and tooling to improve team velocity.
- Communicate architecture and design tradeoffs clearly to diverse audiences.
Requirements
- MS in CS, CE, EE, or related STEM field, or equivalent experience, with 12+ years of production system software development.
- Deep systems-programming expertise in Rust, with experience shipping production Rust at the hardware or kernel boundary.
- Proven track record of designing and evolving long-lived libraries and APIs with ABI and compatibility discipline.
- Fluency in managing large, multi-repository codebases with layered dependencies.
- Demonstrated leadership in driving difficult reliability issue triage to clear root-cause analysis.
- Low-level platform experience including firmware, boot flows, RTOS, BMCs/MCUs, RISC-V, or similar.
- Linux driver or kernel-adjacent experience (e.g., VFIO).
- Experience with hardware bring-up and system triage, including fault analysis and diagnostics in lab environments.
- Established habit of using AI coding agents for development and leverage.
