We are seeking a Staff Software Engineer to lead technical direction at the intersection of engineering and research for the Claude Code team. In this role, you will collaborate with researchers and engineering leadership to define how we measure, understand, and enhance Claude's coding abilities. You will architect the systems, tooling, and evaluation infrastructure that accelerate our research progress and be responsible for technical decisions impacting the team and beyond. This senior individual contributor position is for someone with a proven track record of building and owning large-scale systems, ready to take on a technical leadership role by driving architecture, mentoring engineers, and influencing the future of Claude Code.
Responsibilities
- Set technical direction for evaluation systems, research infrastructure, and internal tooling for the Claude Code team.
- Architect evaluation frameworks to measure model capabilities across diverse coding tasks and scale with research roadmaps.
- Lead the design of infrastructure enabling large-scale researcher experiments and make foundational trade-offs shaping team operations.
- Identify and drive high-leverage engineering investments proactively.
- Act as a senior technical liaison between product and research, using product intuition to influence capability prioritization and progress measurement.
- Mentor other engineers, review designs, unblock peers, and uphold engineering standards.
- Partner with research leads to translate ambiguous research questions into durable engineering solutions.
- Own critical systems end-to-end, from architecture to production reliability and long-term health.
Requirements
- 10+ years of software engineering experience, with a track record as a Staff or Principal engineer (or equivalent) at a high-caliber organization.
- Experience architecting and owning complex, high-stakes systems (pipelines, infrastructure, or platforms).
- History of setting technical direction that others follow through design docs, architectural decisions, or technical strategy.
- Ability to thrive in high-intensity environments with fast iteration cycles, balancing speed with durability.
- Proven ability to take full ownership of ambiguous, open-ended problems and drive them to completion with minimal direction.
- Power user of agentic coding tools with deep intuition about model capabilities and limitations.
- Ability to quickly dive into unfamiliar technical domains (ML systems, research workflows, novel infrastructure) and reach the frontier.
- Strong focus on correctness and reliability, with a history of raising engineering standards.
- Energized by working at the boundary between engineering and AI research and influencing both.
