AI needs a new infrastructure layer, and we're building it at Modal. Our customers, including category-defining companies, rely on Modal for instant GPU access, sub-second container starts, and native storage to serve low-latency inference, fine-tune models, and access production-ready sandboxes at scale. We are seeking strong backend engineers passionate about building developer tools used by the largest AI companies globally. You will be instrumental in developing solutions for large-scale operations and evolving AI workflows.
Responsibilities
- Build and ship modern web applications end-to-end.
- Work across the full stack, including TypeScript on the frontend, Python services on the backend, and ClickHouse for data and analytics.
- Implement and manage observability tools and patterns for large-scale AI workloads.
- Contribute to the development of billing/payments systems, B2B SaaS tooling, enterprise software, or LLM/diffusion model inference and training loads.
- Participate in on-call rotations and respond to production incidents.
- Make effective tradeoffs between shipping speed and scalability.
- Collaborate with product teams to address customer problems.
Requirements
- Experience building and shipping modern web applications end-to-end.
- Comfort working across the stack: TypeScript on the frontend, Python services on the backend, and ClickHouse for data and analytics.
- Deep knowledge of observability tools and patterns for large-scale workloads like custom sandboxes, training, and inference for LLM and diffusion models.
- Experience with at least one of: billing/payments systems, B2B SaaS tooling, enterprise software, or LLM/diffusion models inference and training loads.
- Strong product instincts and a focus on customer problems.
- Ability to participate in on-call rotation and respond to production incidents.
- Ability to make good tradeoffs between shipping fast and building for scale.
- Ability to work in-person in our NYC or SF office.
