Machinify is seeking a Data Scientist with a focus on Natural Language Processing (NLP) to develop models that transform unstructured text into valuable product features and business insights. In this role, you will be responsible for the entire lifecycle of ML projects, from problem framing and data preparation to modeling, evaluation, and deployment. You will collaborate closely with engineering and product teams to integrate your work into user-facing applications. This is an opportunity to work on cutting-edge AI solutions within the healthcare intelligence domain.
Responsibilities
- Design and train NLP models for tasks such as classification, entity extraction, retrieval, summarization, and semantic search.
- Fine-tune and evaluate LLMs (both open-source and API-based), and build RAG pipelines and agentic workflows.
- Develop robust evaluation frameworks, including offline metrics, human-in-the-loop review, and online A/B tests.
- Collaborate with ML engineers to productionize models, considering aspects like latency, cost, monitoring, and drift detection.
- Translate ambiguous product questions into well-defined ML problems and clearly communicate trade-offs to non-technical stakeholders.
Requirements
- 3+ years of applied ML experience with a significant focus on NLP.
- Proficiency in Python and the modern NLP stack, including PyTorch or JAX, Hugging Face Transformers, spaCy, and sentence-transformers.
- Hands-on experience fine-tuning transformer models (e.g., LoRA/QLoRA, instruction tuning, preference optimization) and/or building production RAG systems.
- Strong understanding of model evaluation techniques, including knowledge of metrics like BLEU, ROUGE, BERTScore, and LLM-as-judge, and their appropriate use cases.
- Experience with SQL, vector databases (e.g., pgvector, Pinecone, Weaviate), and at least one major cloud platform (AWS, GCP, or Azure).
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to defend modeling choices and acknowledge when simpler approaches are more effective.
