Machinify is a leading healthcare intelligence company focused on delivering value, transparency, and efficiency to health plan clients. We are seeking a hands-on, technically deep Sr/Director of Engineering to lead our ML Engineering team. This role involves managing and growing a team responsible for building and operating the company's core AI/ML platform at massive scale. You will also act as a key thought partner to the Chief AI Officer, translating data science proof-of-concepts into scalable, production-grade services. The ideal candidate possesses a blend of AI/ML engineering expertise and applied data science fluency, understanding the intricacies of productizing AI/ML capabilities including serving, observability, reliability, and scale.
Responsibilities
- Lead and grow the AI/ML Engineering team, coordinating execution with data scientists on collaborative projects.
- Design, deliver, and operate the core AI/ML platform, including agent frameworks, evaluation harnesses, labeling systems, document processing, semantic search, knowledge bases, and model hosting.
- Ensure reliable operation of AI/ML systems at scale in production, focusing on observability, performance, and incident response, fostering a culture of operational excellence.
- Create processes to transition proof-of-concept code from Data Science into production-grade services.
- Partner with the Chief AI Officer and Product Manager to shape forward-looking product strategy and drive structured thinking in ambiguous situations.
- Run efficient stand-ups across engineering and data science teams and perform capacity planning for predictable delivery velocity.
- Provide leadership to ensure the cross-functional team effectively utilizes AI technologies to enhance coding, PR reviews, testing, observability, and incident response.
- Stay current with the latest developments in LLM/agent advancements and modern AI/ML infrastructure.
Requirements
- BS or MS in Computer Science or equivalent experience.
- 5+ years managing teams of approximately 8+ engineers with hands-on technical leadership.
- 8+ years of direct hands-on technical contributor experience in backend services.
- 3+ years specifically building AI/ML production-grade services at scale for multiple use cases, with direct collaboration between data science and engineering.
- Strong proficiency in backend languages such as Java, Scala, Rust, or similar, plus Python.
- Understanding of the requirements for productizing ML/AI platforms, including workflows, serving, observability, reliability, and scale.
- Sufficient fluency in data science concepts to be a valuable partner to DS leadership.
- Strong communication, organizational, and proactive work ethic.
- Comfort with ambiguity and a demonstrated ability to take initiative.
- Experience in the healthcare domain is a plus.
