About the job
Luma is seeking a Staff Product Software Engineer to set the technical direction for product development, leveraging AI coding agents to ship production systems efficiently. This senior role emphasizes strategic decision-making, scope management, and trade-offs, rather than just coding. The ideal candidate is a technical leader with deep system design judgment and product intuition, adept at directing AI agents to build robust production systems. You will be responsible for deciding what to build, setting technical direction across engineering disciplines, co-owning product strategy, and shaping architecture from conception to deployment. A key aspect of this role involves mentoring engineers on AI tool usage while maintaining high standards and eliminating design flaws.
Responsibilities
- Direct AI coding agents to build production systems quickly, ensuring system design, ownership, and real-world behavior.
- Determine product scope by deciding what to build and what not to build.
- Set technical direction for engineering, including system boundaries, data models, ownership, and operational expectations.
- Collaborate with design and research teams on product direction.
- Make and defend critical trade-offs between speed, reliability, complexity, and extensibility.
- Shape early architecture and own critical outcomes from framing to deployment.
- Mentor engineers on using AI tools effectively and maintaining rigor.
- Eliminate recurring classes of design mistakes.
Requirements
- 8+ years of experience building and shipping production software.
- Experience with multiple non-trivial projects where technical direction and execution were owned end-to-end.
- Demonstrated experience making high-stakes technical decisions that materially affected systems or products.
- Fluency with AI coding tools, with a track record of shipping real functionality in production or substantial side projects.
- Strong technical depth in areas such as system design, distributed systems, security, or infrastructure.
- Strong product intuition, including user empathy, prioritization, and UX taste.
- Ideally, a combination of strong technical depth and product intuition.
