Hex is seeking a Senior or Staff-level software engineer to join our Backend Platform team. This team is responsible for building and maintaining Hex's core compute platform, the engine for all code execution, SQL querying, and data processing within the Hex application. The mission is to make this platform exceptionally easy to use, develop on, and monitor, while ensuring it is fast and performant. Engineers on this team will work at the intersection of systems architecture, API design, and deep performance optimization, tackling projects with high technical complexity across the stack.
Responsibilities
- Build and maintain Hex's core compute platform.
- Develop features for code execution, SQL querying, and data processing.
- Enhance the ease of use, development, and monitoring of the compute platform.
- Optimize the performance and speed of the compute platform.
- Work on projects spanning from backend data systems to the frontend notebook interface.
- Utilize DuckDB for data interoperability between Python and SQL.
- Build intelligent caching systems for data queries.
- Implement a graph-based dependency framework for execution plan optimization.
- Instrument complex, multi-language systems to identify performance bottlenecks.
- Develop visualizations to help users understand code performance.
Requirements
- 6+ years of engineering experience on complex, data-driven systems or applications.
- Expert-level understanding of Python, SQL, jupyter kernels, and/or data warehousing systems.
- Informed on industry trends in data processing, databases, and performant data architectures.
- Ability to dive into complex codebases and design elegant abstractions.
- Passion for understanding performance bottlenecks and optimizing time.
- Strategic thinking aligned with business and product goals.
- Experience in a remote-first team with strong communication skills.
