Hedge is seeking a founding engineer to develop the agents and infrastructure necessary to scale an insurance company. This role involves building systems that process insurance submissions, manage carrier interactions, and automate the process from initial contact to policy coverage. The agents are already operational and used by paying customers, and the founding engineer will be responsible for enhancing their capabilities, improving reliability, and integrating them with carrier systems. This is a unique opportunity to work directly with the founders, contribute to transforming the insurance industry through software, and enable a small team to serve a large volume of brokers.
Responsibilities
- Transform operational insurance tasks into software solutions by working closely with brokers and founders.
- Develop and scale the insurance platform, taking ownership of architecture, data models, integrations, and monitoring.
- Enhance production agents that handle emails, interpret submissions, gather information, and coordinate carrier workflows.
- Build evaluation frameworks and feedback loops to improve agent performance based on real-world outcomes.
- Process and standardize messy carrier data from various formats (PDFs, emails, APIs) into usable records.
- Ensure data accuracy and prevent errors from reaching brokers or customers.
Requirements
- Demonstrated ability to take an unclear problem from inception to a functional software product.
- Strong technical understanding of data integrity, asynchronous workflows, reliability, and scaling.
- Ability to investigate and debug complex systems.
- Exceptional work ethic, grit, and a proactive approach to problem-solving.
- Willingness to perform hands-on operational work to gain deep problem understanding.
- Strong business judgment and a focus on delivering software that improves business economics.
- Ability to identify opportunities, build initial versions, test with users, and iterate quickly.
- Proficiency in using and integrating with frontier AI models.
