About the job
Anthropic's Research Tools team builds systems that support large-scale, distributed finetuning runs and improve researcher productivity. As a manager, you will lead a team of machine learning and distributed systems experts to enhance the efficiency of these systems and tools, facilitate rapid iteration on model development and research, and continuously evolve the infrastructure to integrate new research advancements. This role is central to Anthropic's technical operations, requiring collaboration with research teams to integrate their innovations into the production finetuning pipeline, product teams for customer-oriented model improvements, and infrastructure teams to optimize training runs and data pipelines.
Responsibilities
- Prioritize team work in collaboration with technical leads, research, and product teams to support fast iteration on research projects and training runs.
- Design processes such as postmortem reviews, incident response, and on-call rotations to ensure effective team operation.
- Coach and support direct reports in their professional growth.
- Manage team recruiting efforts efficiently to support rapid growth.
Requirements
- At least 2 years of experience in management with a genuine enjoyment of people management.
- Ability to quickly learn and understand complex, interconnected technical systems at a high level.
- Experience working with research teams, particularly within a research-to-production pipeline.
- Strong people management skills including coaching, performance evaluation, mentorship, and career development.
- Strong project management skills, including prioritization and cross-team communication.
- Experience with team recruiting, including staffing needs assessment, interview loop design, candidate evaluation, and closing.
