About the job
Distyl AI is an applied AI technology company that partners with ambitious institutions to rearchitect critical operations using frontier AI. We research and deploy technologies for AI-native operations, focusing on self-constructing systems, reliable AI execution, and products that transform mission-critical workflows. Our work impacts large-scale operations across various industries, including telecom, healthcare, insurance, and manufacturing.
We are seeking AI Engineers who are hands-on builders and thrive in ambiguous problem spaces. This role involves designing, implementing, deploying, and iterating on end-to-end AI systems in close partnership with customers and subject matter experts. The focus is on making AI systems work reliably in production environments, with accountability for outcomes, rather than just building demos.
Responsibilities
- Build and operate AI systems deployed in customer environments, ensuring system behavior, reliability, and usefulness in production.
- Design and implement compound AI workflows combining models, prompts, agents, tools, retrieval, evaluation, and feedback loops.
- Develop clean, maintainable Python services and application logic to integrate AI capabilities into customer workflows, data platforms, and APIs.
- Operate live systems by measuring behavior, identifying failure modes, debugging issues, and iterating rapidly to improve quality and reliability.
- Build evaluation frameworks, test cases, feedback mechanisms, and observability patterns to improve AI system performance.
- Collaborate with customer stakeholders and subject matter experts to understand workflows, clarify requirements, and adapt systems.
- Utilize AI-native engineering tools to accelerate implementation, debugging, experimentation, and system improvement.
- Collaborate with other engineers and strategists on pragmatic system design decisions.
- Take accountability for the production outcomes of built components, workflows, and systems.
Requirements
- 5+ years of software engineering experience.
- Fluent in French (Written and Spoken) for technical discussions and client collaboration.
- Ownership mentality for AI systems, taking responsibility for their production value and outcomes.
- Experience building AI systems powered by LLMs or other AI models, composing multiple components into end-to-end systems.
- Strong engineering fundamentals, including clean Python, production software systems, versioning, debugging, testing, and performance.
- AI-native working style, using AI tools daily for coding, debugging, design exploration, and automation.
- Comfort working directly with customer teams, asking questions, adapting to new domains, and communicating system limitations.
- Pragmatic delivery mindset, navigating ambiguity and balancing speed with robustness.
- Willingness to travel 10–30% depending on project and customer needs.
Benefits
- Base salary range of $150K – $250K, depending on experience, location, and level.
- Meaningful equity.
- Comprehensive benefits package.
- 100% coverage of medical, dental, and vision insurance for employee and dependents.
- Flexible time off.
- Retirement and financial planning benefits (HSA, FSA, 401(k), financial coaching).
- Comprehensive wellness benefits (physical fitness, mental well-being, fertility and family-building benefits).
