About the job
As a Software Engineer on the Storage team at Cursor, you will be responsible for the data layer that supports all product surfaces, including databases, caches, and the strategy for data provisioning, querying, and scaling. Millions of developers rely on Cursor daily, making the future of our storage architecture a critical high-leverage problem for the company. Your work will directly impact the speed of development, product reliability, and Cursor's ability to scale to meet high demand. You will design and implement a robust, multi-database topology to support this growth.
Responsibilities
- Design and execute the evolution of the storage layer into a partitioned, resilient topology to support rapid growth.
- Build query attribution and guardrails to instrument database queries, identify problematic patterns, and prevent problematic queries from reaching production without review.
- Define the strategy for selecting appropriate data stores, providing clear guidance and best practices for teams.
- Own cache infrastructure end-to-end, focusing on reliability, capacity planning, and patterns that enable product teams to move quickly while ensuring cache correctness.
Requirements
- Deep experience with relational databases at scale, including Postgres, MySQL, or similar OLTP systems.
- Experience solving database sharding, migration, or decomposition problems in production.
- Understanding of the trade-offs between different storage engines.
- Proactive approach to operational excellence, including backups, monitoring, query performance, and capacity planning.
- Strong software engineering fundamentals and experience building systems for other engineers.
