About the job
Crusoe is seeking a Senior Staff Applications Engineer to lead the technical evaluation of potential sites, partnerships, and commercial opportunities for their Spark modular data center (MDC) and Spark-Liquid (DLC) product lines. This role involves building and maintaining a robust evaluation framework, enabling other teams to utilize it, and serving as the primary technical point of contact for complex or unconventional opportunities. You will be responsible for delivering technical verdicts on product fit, quantifying the impact of deviations, and assessing new applications. Your judgment will be critical in converting potential opportunities into deployable capacity, ensuring Crusoe's AI infrastructure solutions meet market demands.
Responsibilities
- Build and maintain a standardized screening criteria, scoring model, decision thresholds, and report format for site and opportunity viability.
- Train and document teams (EDG, business development, partner) to apply the qualification framework for standard opportunities.
- Serve as the primary technical contact for escalated opportunities that the framework cannot resolve, providing clear fit/conditional fit/no-fit verdicts with engineering rationale.
- Deliver feasibility assessments for escalated opportunities within days.
- Identify opportunities requiring deviation from standard configurations, quantify engineering cost and schedule impacts, and route them to the appropriate engineering discipline.
- Evaluate technical fit for non-standard applications like edge deployments, distributed energy assets, and co-located industrial sites.
- Provide feedback on recurring field constraints to Spark design engineering and R&D as prioritized product requirements.
- Serve as Spark's technical counterpart to the Energy Development Group (EDG) throughout the site pipeline.
- Evaluate candidate sites and opportunities against Spark module requirements (power, thermal, civil, physical interface).
- Conduct site walks with EDG, developers, and utility counterparties, translating observations into product requirements and a risk register.
- Provide technical inputs for financial modeling of opportunities, including module configuration, power/cooling assumptions, and efficiency factors.
- Translate multi-discipline engineering tradeoffs into clear decision frameworks for commercial and executive stakeholders.
Requirements
- 10+ years of progressive engineering experience in data center infrastructure, power generation or utility interconnection, industrial capital projects, or modular/containerized systems.
- Working fluency across data center infrastructure disciplines: electrical (MV/LV distribution, switchgear, transformers), mechanical/thermal (DLC, CDUs, heat rejection), and civil/structural (foundations, seismic/wind loading, rigging).
- Proven track record of making feasibility calls from first principles under incomplete information with accountability for recommendations.
- Ability to maintain technical credibility with external developers, utilities, enterprise customers, and executives while ensuring rapid progress of opportunities.
