Cohere is a leading enterprise AI company focused on building cutting-edge foundation AI models and end-to-end products for real-world business problems. We are seeking experienced Technical Program Managers to join our growing Generative Machine Learning organization. In this role, you will be instrumental in scaling our foundational processes, enhancing operational capacity, and driving the execution of complex, cross-functional AI initiatives. You will partner directly with senior leadership and collaborate with diverse teams to design, train, and improve our core generative models, ensuring rigorous engineering operations and strategic planning. This is a dynamic, high-growth environment perfect for ambitious individuals excited about solving novel problems and scaling their impact alongside the company.
Responsibilities
- Establish, improve, and scale foundational processes for Generative Modeling teams to enhance execution, speed, and predictability.
- Scale the operational capacity and effectiveness of the Modeling TPM team to manage increasing program portfolio complexity and size.
- Adapt flexibly to company, program, and team needs, managing both long-horizon and ambiguous short-term challenges with company-wide impact.
- Partner directly with leaders within and outside the Modeling organization on efforts to design, train, and improve core generative models.
- Lead cross-functional, company-wide programs and strategic initiatives, coordinating with Product, Engineering, Legal, Platform, Infra, Policy, and Finance.
- Improve engineering execution rigor and operations, contributing to strategic planning with senior modeling leadership.
- Map out dependencies and risks, ensure smooth cross-functional execution, and communicate status to technical and non-technical stakeholders and senior management.
- Own and enable effective communication of priorities, ideas, and knowledge throughout the Modeling organization and beyond.
- Respond quickly to program-level changes, clarify scope, and manage resource needs based on evolving priorities.
Requirements
- 5-10 years as a Technical Program Manager.
- 5+ years of experience working directly on AI/ML.
- Strong preference for candidates with direct experience building foundation models.
- In-depth knowledge of machine learning, particularly Natural Language Processing & Large Language Models (LLMs).
- Bonus points for experience with Multimodal AI.
- Experience working in chaotic, fast-paced, low-structure environments.
- Pragmatic approach, ability to roll up sleeves, and function at both tactical and strategic levels.
- Hands-on understanding of the unique challenges of managing AI/ML development projects compared to traditional software program management.
- Experience managing projects and programs requiring strong general business acumen (e.g., finance reporting, regulatory compliance).
- Optional but preferred: Technical experience in a hands-on capacity, comfortable discussing complex ML problems with researchers.
