Cloudflare is seeking a Senior Network Engineer to join its Edge Network & Backbone team. This role is focused on the operational trenches, owning complex faults, driving capacity work, and setting standards for network operations. Beyond hands-on operations, you will shape the team's future by building AI-enabled tooling and agents to reduce toil, accelerate troubleshooting, and enhance team effectiveness. This is a North American-based role within a global team that operates 24/7.
Responsibilities
- Own the technical operation, engineering, and architecture of Cloudflare's global network, including hardware and software management.
- Serve as a hands-on operational anchor, diagnosing and resolving complex network faults, owning incident response, and contributing to post-incident reviews.
- Build production AI agents for network operations, designing and shipping LLM-powered tools that integrate with operational systems.
- Apply AI to accelerate troubleshooting using internal platforms for root cause analysis and pattern recognition.
- Architect network improvements to lower latency, reduce packet loss, and increase scale.
- Mentor and develop junior engineers, setting technical standards and fostering a culture of operational excellence.
- Collaborate with internal teams on cross-functional network projects, contributing to documentation and knowledge base articles.
Requirements
- Proven track record in large-scale network engineering and operations.
- Proficiency in Python, TypeScript, or Go for building and maintaining agent code.
- Working knowledge of agent integration patterns like function/tool calling and retrieval over operational corpora.
- Experience reasoning about agent failure modes in production, including hallucination guards and rollback mechanisms.
- Deep expertise in BGP and anycast routing, with the ability to diagnose and resolve complex routing issues.
- Strong understanding of MPLS and Segment Routing.
- Proficiency across multiple network vendor operating systems (Juniper, Cisco, Arista, or similar).
- Experience with network automation frameworks (SaltStack, Ansible, or equivalent).
- Ability to prioritize effectively and lead calmly in high-pressure scenarios.
- Effective communication skills adaptable to various audiences.
