Cloudflare is seeking a Principal Engineer to join the Developer Tooling team, which builds internal platforms to enhance the velocity and developer experience for Cloudflare's engineering teams. This role is hands-on, with both engineering and operational responsibilities, focusing on AI-assisted development. You will build and operate AI tools used by thousands of engineers daily, taking end-to-end ownership of projects, providing technical mentorship, and improving the experience for the engineers you build for. The team is responsible for AI-assisted development across all of Cloudflare engineering, with significant growth in adoption.
Responsibilities
- Ship features for AI coding tools.
- Build and improve AI and developer-observability tools.
- Own internal MCP servers (GitLab, Confluence, Jira, Backstage).
- Build AI agents.
- Maintain context engineering, including shared configs, prompt libraries, and agent instructions.
- Integrate AI tooling into CI/CD pipelines.
- Manage security and access controls for AI tools.
- Track adoption and usage of tools across the organization.
- Triage and respond to support requests in tool channels.
- Own projects end-to-end, from roadmap and prioritization through delivery and operation.
- Mentor teammates and improve team standards through code reviews and design feedback.
- Respond to and prevent incidents on critical engineer-dependent tools.
Requirements
- Strong coding ability in TypeScript, Go, Rust, and Bash.
- Excellent debugging skills.
- Source control experience (branching, merging, rebasing).
- Experience deploying and operating on Kubernetes or similar platforms.
- Ability to break down complex problems, weigh trade-offs, and drive them to completion.
- Mentoring experience and a drive to raise the bar for colleagues.
- Experience with or strong interest in building tools that improve developer experience (DevEx).
