AI Agent Engineer
About the job
Cline is seeking an experienced engineer to build the core agent systems that power their open-source AI agents. This role involves developing the runtime, orchestration, tools, evaluation frameworks, and product surfaces that enable agents to understand context, use tools safely, recover from failures, and complete complex tasks. The ideal candidate is passionate about Cline's mission to make capable, transparent, and affordable AI agents accessible to everyone, and believes in user choice regarding AI models. This position requires a strong builder who can also delegate effectively, breaking down ambiguous goals into actionable tasks and providing feedback to improve AI agent output.
Responsibilities
- Build core systems for agentic workflows including planning, tool use, context management, task execution, memory, feedback, and recovery.
- Design reliable infrastructure for agents to invoke tools, edit files, run commands, call APIs, and complete multi-step tasks.
- Improve agent quality through evaluations, benchmarks, traces, user feedback, and production debugging.
- Build model-agnostic systems for routing, inference, caching, streaming, and cost/performance optimization across various models.
- Collaborate with product, design, research, and open-source contributors to rapidly deliver agent capabilities.
- Lead major technical initiatives from architecture through launch, monitoring, and iteration.
Requirements
- 5+ years of software engineering experience, including meaningful tech lead, staff-level, or engineering management experience.
- Strong product engineering background with experience building polished user-facing features across frontend and backend systems.
- Experience with production languages such as TypeScript/Node.js, Python, Go, or Rust.
- Familiarity with LLM patterns including tool calling, context management, evals, retrieval, model routing, tracing, and cost/performance trade-offs.
- Direct experience using AI coding assistants and/or building agent systems.
- Ability to rapidly prototype new agent use cases and develop production-quality systems.
- Strong judgment regarding the optimal use of agents versus human input.
Benefits
- Meaningful equity
- Comprehensive health, dental, and vision insurance for you and your dependents
- 401(k) plan
