About the job
CHAOS Industries is seeking a mission-oriented Applied AI Engineer to develop, integrate, and deploy AI/ML capabilities across its defense product lines. This role involves working with data scientists, software engineers, and product teams to conduct advanced AI research and translate it into reliable, real-world software, particularly for defense applications requiring extreme accuracy under challenging conditions. The ideal candidate possesses strong data science and software engineering fundamentals, a track record of technical excellence, and experience applying AI/ML to real products, with a preference for backgrounds in aerospace, defense, or similar mission-driven environments. Comfort with independent operation, rapid learning of new technical domains, cross-team collaboration, and moving prototypes to production with minimal oversight is essential.
Responsibilities
- Build applied AI systems across product lines, including model integration, inference services, evaluation pipelines, and production AI capabilities.
- Conduct research and build products by collaborating with teams to research, collect data, verify hypotheses, and create robust, testable, maintainable, and deployable models.
- Evaluate and improve model performance in real-world conditions, including adversarial, low-power, edge, and degraded input environments.
- Develop production-quality software for data pipelines, model serving, monitoring, lifecycle management, data processing, and system integration.
- Create rapid prototypes with stakeholders and iterate towards production-ready implementations.
- Contribute to AI system reliability through testing, benchmarking, observability, interpretability, failure analysis, and performance optimization.
- Quickly learn from existing codebases, documentation, research, and domain experts to drive execution.
- Effectively manage time across meetings, technical discovery, implementation, experimentation, and production support.
Requirements
- US Citizen or Permanent Resident.
- BS/MS/PhD in a technical field (Computer Science, Engineering, Data Science, Math, Physics) or equivalent experience.
- 2-5 years of professional software development experience (exceptional fresh grads considered).
- Very strong Python programming skills.
- Experience building, testing, deploying, and supporting production software and models.
- Experience with AI/ML model integration, model serving infrastructure, or model lifecycle management.
- Experience with model evaluation, benchmarking, robustness testing, interpretability, or ML observability.
- Familiarity with APIs, Distributed systems, Containers, CI/CD, observability, and edge deployment environments/GPU optimization.
- Enthusiasm for learning unfamiliar technical domains.
Benefits
- Medical, dental, and vision benefits 100% paid by the company.
- 401k with 50% company match up to 6% of pay.
- FSA, HSA, life insurance.
- Free daily lunch.
