Campfire is seeking an AI Engineer to build production AI agents that assist customers with accounting tasks. This hands-on role involves shaping agent architecture, shipping customer-facing features, and establishing reliable engineering practices. You will collaborate closely with engineering, product, and design teams to transform complex problems into trustworthy software solutions. The ideal candidate will combine strong software engineering fundamentals with practical experience in developing and operating agentic applications, from automating financial workflows to enabling customers to understand and act on their financial data.
Responsibilities
- Build production AI agents to automate financial workflows and assist customers with financial data.
- Shape the agent architecture and establish engineering practices for reliability.
- Ship customer-facing features for AI-powered accounting software.
- Own agent quality in production through evaluations, tracing, monitoring, and debugging.
- Make architectural decisions and mentor other engineers.
- Balance accuracy, latency, cost, and complexity in agent design.
Requirements
- Strong software engineering background with experience in production backend systems.
- Proficiency in Python, including APIs, data models, distributed systems, and testing.
- Hands-on experience shipping LLM-powered agents with tool calling, orchestration, retrieval, and integration.
- Experience owning agent quality in production.
- Practical judgment regarding agent permissions, data access, human approvals, and failure recovery.
- Ability to balance accuracy, latency, cost, and complexity.
- Track record of staff-level impact, including leading initiatives and mentoring engineers.
- Experience owning consequential production systems and explaining tradeoffs and lessons learned.
- Experience taking AI agents beyond demos and prototypes based on real usage.
- Curiosity about accounting and financial workflows; fintech or accounting experience is a plus.
- Ability to collaborate closely with cross-functional teams and communicate technical decisions clearly.
