Braintrust is seeking a Software Engineer, Billing to develop and maintain the systems responsible for accurate, scalable, and transparent pricing, usage, and payments. This role involves working across the entire billing stack, including usage metering, subscriptions, entitlements, payment integrations, invoicing, and credits. You will be a technical authority, ensuring billing correctness and scale, and will play a key role in launching new pricing models that support customer growth. This is a deeply technical individual contributor role focused exclusively on billing systems.
Responsibilities
- Own Braintrust billing architecture end-to-end, including metering, plans, subscriptions, entitlements, invoices, credits, and payments.
- Design billing architecture to address immediate needs and simplify future feature development.
- Ensure accurate measurement and billing for product usage, including processed data, evaluation scores, model usage, and data retention.
- Partner with product, infrastructure, finance, and customer-facing teams to introduce new pricing models and billing workflows.
- Build reliable usage-metering and aggregation pipelines.
- Develop a subscription, limits, and entitlement system supporting plan allowances, feature access, trials, upgrades, and on-demand usage.
- Create internal tools and APIs for investigating billing anomalies, issuing credits, and assisting customers with account status.
- Implement observability across the billing pipeline, monitoring metering lag, event completeness, reconciliation discrepancies, and payment health.
Requirements
- Expert-level understanding of TypeScript, Rust, SQL, backend systems, APIs, and distributed data-processing patterns.
- Experience building and operating production usage-based billing, payments, or subscription systems.
- Experience with metering, aggregation, idempotency, reconciliation, and event-driven architectures.
- Experience integrating with Stripe or similar payment infrastructure.
- Comfortable shipping end-to-end, from backend infrastructure and data systems to internal tools and customer-facing UI.
- Appreciation for balancing speed of development with customer trust and billing correctness.
