Baseten is seeking an AI Engineer to join their Training Product team. This role involves building AI-driven product features for customers training frontier models and enhancing Baseten's internal AI capabilities by transforming manual workflows into agentic ones. You will collaborate directly with research engineers, taking concepts from internal research to customer-ready products. This is a hands-on position offering significant autonomy, where you will identify key problems, develop reliable AI systems with appropriate harnesses and guardrails, and take ownership of the outcomes. The ideal candidate has a proven track record of shipping agents and is eager to make that their primary focus.
Responsibilities
- Build and ship agentic product experiences, from prototype to general availability.
- Design harnesses, execution flows, and guardrails for reliable AI systems in production.
- Develop internal automation and AI tooling to boost the velocity of engineering, research, and go-to-market teams.
- Partner with research engineers to translate internal research workflows into customer-facing features.
- Define and instrument evaluations to measure output quality improvements.
- Implement features end-to-end across the API layer, backend, agent orchestration, and frontend.
- Utilize Baseten's training and inference products to gain insights into customer workflows.
- Identify opportunities to replace manual processes with AI and build solutions directly.
- Address bugs and customer issues with urgency.
Requirements
- 5+ years of experience building and shipping software applications.
- Demonstrated experience building AI or LLM-powered products, agents, or agentic workflows used by real users.
- Strong software engineering fundamentals and the ability to meet a high technical bar.
- Ability to develop accurate mental models of system internals, including models and harnesses.
- Proficiency in Python and fluency in at least one other programming language.
- Comfort working autonomously in a fast-paced, less structured environment.
- Ability to transition between customer-facing product work and internal tooling/automation.
- Strong communication skills, bridging technical depth and business needs.
